Want Windmill Electricity? Don’t Assume You Can Have It!

Whether you agree or disagree with your cities rules on residential windmills, you will still need to find out what the rules are before erecting one on your property and enjoying windmill electricity for yourself.

I personally feel that as long as you are following safety rules then you should be able to have one if you want to and can afford it. Unfortunately this is not the case in most communities. Spending $15,000 more or less to buy a residential windmill and have it put up is a lot of money if you are just going to have to take it down.

California is known for its obsession for going green. California is also known for its numerous rules and regulation for just about everything you could think off. Another thing California is known for is its picky residents.

If you would like to read an article about a California man that is having trouble keeping his windmill electricity right now than click on the link.

The morel of his story is know what your community’s rules are before getting your own windmill electricity and keep up with changes. The might be a time when a residential windmill friendly community will change and you will need to turn into an advocate for windmill electricity.

Why Use Windmill Electricity or Other Alternative Energy

There are many reasons to use <windmill electricity. Here is a list to consider. Some of these reasons are going to make a lot of sense to you while others will not. We all have our own interests and priorities. And some of us would just rather use solar power, but that is for another article.

1.  You can get off the grid. We just went through a time a pretty high energy costs recently. Electricity and gas has gotten more affordable in resent months, but it does not mean these high energy bills are over. The price of energy could double at any moment for any reason. Would not be nice to be free of your electric and gas company when it does. In some areas you can actually sell any excess windmill electricity you produce to the grid.

2.  You will do your part to lower the burning of fossil fuels. Enough is said about this subject, so I will not add to it. At this point you probably already have an opinion about the earth and your part in it. No matter what your opinion is, there is an abundance of wind to go around.

3.  Windmill electricity is just really neat. Just think about how a windmill or a wind turbine works. The wind blows which turns the windmill blades. The power of the wind is converted into power that you can use to wash your clothes or cook your dinner.

Windmill electricity tends to be an expensive option to out energy needs as the equipment can be very pricy. As there popularity grows windmills will get more affordable. If you are interested in windmill power you should consider learning how to make your own less expensively than the pre-made ones.

Windmill electricity –Basic Parts of a Wind Turbine

Not all of us windmill electricity enthusiasts are mechanics and have a full understanding of how machines work. I still think it might be some sort of magic when I look up and see planes flying in the sky. For those of us that are not technical here is a list of the basic parts of a windmill or wind turbine.

Windmill Blades

The windmill blades are the part on top that spin. They are curved a little bit so that when the wind blows they will spin in one direction. Modern windmill blades are made in a shape that will help them get the most energy from wind as they spin. This spinning is where the windmill electricity starts.

Gearbox

The gearbox of a windmill has a rotor and a shaft. When creating windmill electricity the blades spin the rotor and the rotor spins the shaft. Each component spinning faster than the one before. The energy then enters the generator.

Generator

The generator usually has magnets and a conductor. Going back to the shaft in the gearbox. The shaft rotates the magnets which surrounds the conductor. The magnets spinning around the conductor creates voltage.

There other parts to creating windmill electricity, but these are the basic parts to know. Whether you are adventurous and try to make your own residential windmill or you buy one and have it installed, you should have a basic grasp of how a wind turbine works. Wind energy is just one form of energy that you can have working for you independence of the electric grid.

Want Windmill Electricity? How Tall Can Your Turbine Be?

As Green energy becomes more popular the governments of cities, states, and the country are going are coming up with more rules and regulations for if and what kind of windmill electricity you can put up on your property.

As annoying as being told what you can and can’t do on your land is, it is still going to save you a lot of money and aggravation if you research what is allowed in your area and comply with it. Unfortunately these rules are likely to change depending on how pro windmill electricity your community is and how far from other residents your wind turbine is.

Once you have studied and then gone to the expense of putting up a wind turbine then you will have to become a real advocate for windmill electricity to make sure you can keep it.
