How to Make a Windmill – What Are the Parts

Before figuring out how to make a windmill you need to know what the main parts are. Capturing wind to turn into energy to power your home is the most natural thing to do. Unfortunately buying a pre-made windmill is expensive. You don’t even know if you are going to have enough wind or if your neighborhood is going to let you have a wind turbine in your yard that is up to three times the height of your house. The best place to start is learning how to make a windmill. You can learn a lot from building a small model to power one of your electronics.

Rotor Blades

The rotor blades are the part that catches the wind. The blades of windmill have changes and become thinner and sleeker over the centuries, but there purpose has always been the same. The wind hits the rotor blades and spins the shaft.

Shaft

The shaft is connected to the rotor. When the wind blows and hits the blades they turn the rotor and in turn turns the shaft. The wind energy gets transferred to the shaft before moving on.

Generator

You can’t use the winds energy without a generator. The simplest generator consists of magnets and a conductor. The shaft is connected to a series of magnets, which generates voltage in a coil of wire.
